No. 1 British Flying Training School Museum

Terrell – Terrell, Texas looks like your typical town here in the Lone Star State. Its historic downtown area is usually bustling with business, but in the early 1940s, the numerous planes buzzing in the sky caused a stir. To learn more about why the area is so active with planes, head out of the airport to visit UK Flight School No 1 Museum. In the spring of 1941, Great Britain was at war with Germany for eighteen long months. With no sign of hostilities in sight, this small island nation urgently needed additional trained crews. Thanks to the Lease-Lease Agreement, England reached out to friends across the Atlantic – and the UK’s No. 1 Flight School in Terrell, Texas was born.

During World War II, thousands of British pilots learned to fly at six civilian schools in the United States. The first and largest school is in Terrell, Texas. After the United States entered the war, US air force cadets also trained at the school. More than 2,000 pilots of the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces flew over North Texas between 1941 and 1945. The citizens of Terrell welcome student pilots to their community and many lasting relationships have been forged. The cadets trained with the PT17 and AT6, an aircraft aptly named the Texan. For six months, they were taught by civilian instructors. Some of the students who came here included men like Robert Hardy, who would later become an actor in films such as Harry Potter, Thomas Round, who would become an opera star, and even some Americans trained here as Lieutenant Richard Hill, who had the unique distinction of winning two pairs of wings.

The museum celebrates this little-known medal in World War II history. The collection includes hundreds of historical artifacts: diaries, training materials, World War II memorabilia and uniforms. The museum’s archives contain the most comprehensive record of Britain’s No. 1 Flight School in existence.
