Terrell – Terrell, Texas looks like your typical town in the Lone Star State. In the spring of 1941, Great Britain was at war with Germany for eighteen long months. With no signs of hostilities, this small island nation was in dire need of more trained crews. Thanks to the Lend-Lease agreement, England contacted friends on the other side of the Atlantic – and Britain’s first flying school in Terrell, Texas was born.

During World War II, thousands of British pilots learned to fly at six American civilian schools. The first and largest school is located in Terrell, Texas. After the United States entered the war, the school also trained US Air Force cadets. Between 1941 and 1945, more than 2,000 Royal Air Force and US Army Air Forces pilots flew over North Texas. Terrell residents welcome the pilot students into their community and many lasting relationships have been formed. The cadets trained on the PT17 and AT6 aircraft, aptly named the Texan. For six months, they were taught by civilian instructors. Some of the students who came here were men like Robert Hardy, who later became an actor in films like Harry Potter, Thomas Round, who became an opera star, and even some Americans who were trained here like Lt.
