Terrell History Museum

The Terrell Carnegie Library Building was built in 1904 and is a registered Texas Historic Site. The Terrell Heritage Society Museum, located in the North Texas town of Terrell, is an area archive containing much of the community’s history. The diverse collection includes archival photographs depicting Terrell’s original streets, homes and residents, such as downtown Terrell’s delightful oval between horse-drawn traffic jams. and by bus. Other museum items include a brass coin picker used in Terrell’s boot and shoe shop and an 1863 Chickamauga war flag. Also on display is the Estey pipe organ, one of the museum’s most prized items, donated by the First Baptist Church of Terrell.

The museum is housed in the former Terrell Carnegie Library building, a 1904 neoclassical institution designed by Waco architecture firm Messer and Smith. The building is both a Texas Registered Historic Landmark and a National Ancient Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also home to the Fine Arts Association of Northeast Texas, which features paintings by local artists along with the museum collections of regional Texas artist Frank Reaugh. Reaugh and his parents settled near Terrell in 1876. After studying in Europe, Reaugh returned to Texas and settled in Dallas. The museum is open from 10:00 am. until 4:00 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays by appointment, on Fridays. Appointments must be made at least one day in advance. The Terrell Carnegie Library Building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, served as the Terrell Library until the mid-1980s.
